Am 16. Juni 1972 erscheint ein Album, das die Welt der Rock- und Popmusik für immer veränderte: „The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars“. Das damals fünfte Studioalbum von David Bowie feiert heute seinen 50. Jahrestag und ich sage euch, warum Ziggy Stardust Queer History ist.

David Bowie hatte mit Ziggy Stardust eine Kunstfigur erschaffen, die provokant mit sexuellen Identitäten und Geschlechterrollen spielte. In den 70ern war dies so queer, dass es die breite Masse zunächst nicht einmal als anstößig empfand. Vielmehr legte der Musiker damit den Grundstein für seine Karriere als einer der einflussreichsten Popmusiker aller Zeiten.

In den vergangenen 50 Jahren ist „The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars“ ein Meilenstein geblieben und hat mit jedem Jahr an Bedeutung gewonnen. Es ist heute ein fester Bestandteil der Popkultur. Der Einfluss erstreckt sich auf Musiker wie Arcade Fire, Lady Gaga, Harry Styles bis hin zu Sam Ryder. Auch Noel Fieldings Hemden bei „The Great British Bake-Off“ sind von Bowie inspiriert, wie auch Ziggys Make-up-Challenges auf Tik-Tok, die die verstorbene Ikone der jungen Generation näher bringt.  

Bowie und die Queere-Bewegung

Rückblickend war Bowie mit der Kunstfigur Ziggy Stardust seiner Zeit weit voraus. Eine so androgyne Ästhetik, wie auch das Spiel mit Geschlechterrollen, finden erst Jahre später wirklich Platz in der Popkultur. Bowie outete sich jedoch schon 1972 in einem Interview als schwul. Dies stand für viele Menschen im Widerspruch zu der Tatsache, dass er eine Frau und einen Sohn hatte. Allerdings spielten viele seiner Lieder und Auftritte auf die schwule Kultur an. Egal ob als Cross-Dresser (wie man es damals noch gerne nannte) für Fotoshootings und Konzerte oder auf seinen Plattencovern. Im Jahr 1974 behauptete Bowie dann, er sei bisexuell und in den 1980er Jahren sagte er einem Interviewer, er sei die ganze Zeit über ein „heimlicher Heterosexueller“ gewesen.

Von Anfang an wurde Bowies Sexualität nicht nur von Kritikern sondern von der gesamten Öffentlichkeit mit großer Skepsis betrachtet. Die mit seiner Sexualität verbundene Zweideutigkeit machte ihn jedoch nur noch begehrenswerter und interessanter. Diese Popularität wiederum half auch der Queeren-Community in ihrem Kampf für Gleichberechtigung. Ob Bowie nun die Absicht hatte, ihre Sache voranzutreiben oder nicht, hatte er durchweg einen passiven Einfluss.

Die Stonewall Riots im Jahr 1969 gaben den Anstoß für die Schwulenrechtsbewegung und trugen dazu bei, die schwule Gemeinschaft zu vereinen. Dieses neue Gefühl manifestierte sich in Schwulenrechtsorganisationen wie der Gay Liberation Front. In Magazinen wie „The Advocate“ und „Drag“ wurden David Bowie und seine Auftritte oftmals abgedruckt, was einen Einblick in die Beziehung zwischen Bowie und den Mitgliedern der schwulen Gemeinschaft gibt. Jedoch hatte es Bowie zu Lebzeiten abgelehnt, als Sprecher für die LGBTQ+-Community zu fingieren.

Special zum Jubiläum

Zur Feier des goldenen Jubiläums kündigt Parlophone Records eine spezielle Streaming-Single an: „Starman“ (Top of the Pops Edition 2022). Denn Bowies Auftritt mit „Starman“ bei Top Of The Pops ist zweifellos eines der wichtigsten Musikstücke, die jemals im Fernsehen gesendet wurden. Es hat Generationen von Musikern, Künstlern und Schriftstellern beeinflusst, die es damals gesehen haben, und unzählige andere, die es im Laufe der Jahrzehnte über Raubkopien auf VHS bis zu YouTube-Clips gesehen haben. 
 
Ebenfalls am 17. Juni 2022, 50 Jahre und einen Tag nach dem ursprünglichen Veröffentlichungsdatum in Großbritannien, wird „The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars“ als limitierte Jubiläums-LP mit Half-Speed-Mastering und einer Picture-Disc mit demselben Master und einem nachgebildeten Werbeplakat für das Album erscheinen. Diese Neupressung wurde auf einer speziell angefertigten Neumann VMS80-Drehmaschine mit vollständig überarbeiteter Elektronik von den restaurierten 192kHz-Mastern der Original-Masterbänder der Trident Studios geschnitten, ohne zusätzliche Bearbeitung beim Transfer.

Auch auf Social Media wird das Jubiläum gefeiert. Unter #ZiggyStardust50 veröffentlichen Fans diverse Postings und auch einen „Ziggy Stardust 50“-Sticker kann man bei TikTok hinzufügen. Einfach in der Suche nach „ziggy“ suchen.
