Vor 20 Jahren etablierte sich Jennifer Lopez mit ihrem Album J.Lo!

2001 war ein unfassbares Jahr für die Pop-Welt und deswegen werfe ich dieses Jahr in meiner Reihe „Pop 20 Years Ago“ immer wieder einen Blick zurück. Den Anfang macht Jennifer Lopez, die am 16. Januar 2001 ihr zweites Album veröffentlichte. Mit „Love Don’t Cost A Thing“ als erste Single, lagen die Erwartungen sehr hoch.

Im April 2000 wurde bekannt gegeben, dass Jennifer Lopez, die gerade den Film „Wedding Planner“ abgedreht hatte, bereits an ihrem Nachfolger zum Debütalbums „On the 6“ arbeiten würde. Ursprünglich wurde das Album als „My Passionate Journey“ angekündigt. Sean Combs, den wir als P. Diddy und damaligen Partner von Jennifer Lopez kennen, war als einer der Produzenten für das erste Album verantwortlich und sollte auch wieder zum neuen Album beitragen. Auch Rodney Jerkins, Produzent von der Durchbruch-Single „If You Had My Love“ vom Debütalbum, war wieder dabei.

Lopez änderte den Titel des Albums

Das Album war für November 2000 angekündigt, die erste Single sollte Ende September erscheinen. Doch Lopez drehte noch weitere Filme und konnte erst im August mit den Aufnahmen beginnen, so dass sie die Deadline überschritt. Sie entschied dann auch, dass das Album „J.Lo“ heißen solle, um ihrer gewachsenen kreativen Kontrolle über ihre musikalische Karriere Rechnung zu tragen. J.Lo ist ein Spitzname, den ihr ihre Fans gaben. Später adaptierten Künstler wie Janet Jackson (Damita Joe, 2004) und Mariah Carey (The Emancipation of Mimi, 2005) ebenfalls ihre Spitznamen als Albumtitel.

Interessant war auch, dass Jennifer Lopez vor der Veröffentlichung des Albums ihr Image änderte. Sie färbte ihre Haare und sorgte dafür, dass der Name J.Lo in direkten Zusammenhang mit ihr steht. Gleichzeitig  vermarktete sie sich nun mehr als Sexsymbol. am 1. Dezember 2001 erschien dann mit „Love Don’t Cost A Thing“ die erste Single, die sofort zum Erfolg für Lopez wurde. Der Song erreichte unter anderem Platz 1 im Vereinigten Königreich. In den USA kam die Single auf Platz 3 der Billboard Hot 100. Platz 2 in der Schweiz und Platz 6 in Deutschland, so wie Platin in Australien

12 Millionen Mal verkauft

Das Album erschien schließlich am 16. Januar 2001. In der ersten Woche wurde das Album in den USA 272.000 Mal verkauft und ging direkt auf Platz 1 der Billboard Charts. In Deutschland stieg das Album ebenfalls auf Platz 1 ein, ebenso wie in der Schweiz und in Kanada. Weltweit wurde das Album bis heute 12 Millionen Mal verkauft. Als weitere Singles wurden dann „Play“, „Ain’t It Funny“ und „I’m Real“ veröffentlicht.

Die Kritiken waren durchaus gemischt und pendelten sich im Mittelfeld ein. Der Rolling Stone gab dem Album damals nur die Hälfte der möglichen fünf Sterne. Weitere Kritik an dem Album war die Kontroverse um die Vocals. So sollen auf einigen Songs die Vocals von Christina Milian, die für den Song und das Demo zu „Play“ verantwortlich war, deutlich zu hören sein und J.Lo’s Stimme sogar übertönen oder gar ganz ersetzten.

Kontroverse um J.Lo und Mariah Carey

Eine weitere Kontroverse, die auch evtl. das Verhältnis von Mariah Carey zu Jennifer Lopez erklären könnte, ist „I’m Real“. Sowohl das Original als auch der Remix basieren auf einem Sample von Yellow Magic Orchestras Lied „Firecracker“ und verwendet dieses beim Intro sowie im Chorus. Tommy Mottola, Ex-Ehemann von Mariah Carey, hatte das Sample nach Aussage von Irv Gotti wohl in einem Trailer zum Film „Glitter“ mit Mariah Carey gehört und, obwohl er Careys Version kannte, das Sample benutzen lassen. Tatsächlich hatte Carey das Sample einen Monat vor Lopez angemeldet, musste im Zuge dieser Kontroverse das Lied dennoch zurückziehen. Gotti sagte später außerdem, Mottola hätte ihn instruiert, einen Track vom Album „Glitter“ zu kopieren, den er vor der Trennung von Carey produziert hatte.
