Robyn´s „Honey“-Album ist ein Meisterwerk an Retro-Emotionen – Review!

Am 26. Oktober erscheint nach acht Jahren das neue Robyn Album „Honey“, auf das Fans so lange gewartet haben. Ich durfte mir die Platte letzte Woche schon anhören und gebe Euch hier einen Rundumschlag. Robyn hatte sich vorab mit den Singles „Missing U“ und dem Titeltrack „Honey“ zurückgemeldet.

Wären wir nicht im digitalen Zeitalter des Musikkonsums und hätten immer noch die traditionellen Vertriebswege der Musikveröffentlichung, wäre Robyn heute sowas, wie Madonna in den 90ern. Doch die Digitalisierung macht auch vor innovativen Künstlern keinen Halt und die Tatsache, dass Robyn ganze acht Jahre keine Solo-Musik veröffentlicht hat, gibt seinen Rest dazu. Heute erreicht auch Robyn nur noch gezielt ihre Fans und nicht mehr die breite Masse. Denn sonst wäre sie jetzt schon, gemessen an der musikalischen Glanzleistung ihrer Werke, eine Musikikone. 

Mit Bodytalk veröffentlichte Robyn damals drei Alben in sechs Monaten. Eine furchtbare Idee, die nur anhand der herausragenden Songs funktioniert hat. Heute ist es zum Glück anders. „Honey“ erscheint als klassisches Gesamtalbum mit neun Songs ohne verwirrendes Veröffentlichungs-Konzept. Und das war auch bitter nötig in einer Zeit, in der Alben von sogenannten „Musikikonen“ eher enttäuschen. Nun ist Robyn endlich da, um uns vom Gegenteil zu überzeugen. 

Track by Track

Das Album startet mit der ersten Single „Missing U“. Eine typische Robyn Nummer im einzigartigen Robyn-Sound, die sagt: „Ich bin zurück und ich bin die einzige Künstlerin, die so klingt“. Der Song hätte auch ein „Bodytalk“-Track sein können und ähnelt zugleich auch am ehesten ihrer „Every Heartbeat“-Ära. 

Mit „Human Beeing“ wird direkt klar, dass das neue Album keine „Bodytalk“-Fortsetzung ist. Der Track hat eine Mischung aus 80er-Synth-Pop gepaart mit 80-Synth-RnB. Als Feature ist Zhala mit auf der Midtempo-Nummer, die genauso sanft wie auch tanzbar vor sich hingroovt.

„Because It´s In The Music“ bleibt in den 80ern. Man hat das Gefühl, dass sich Fleetwood Mac und Chaka Kahn in diesem Song verstecken. Ein leicht asiatischer Flair durchleuchtet den Song mit schönen Harmonien in Robyn´s Stimme.  „Human Beeing“ und „Because It´s In The Music“ sind zugleich der Beweis, dass die Musik von Robyn aus dem kühlen Electro ins warme Licht gekrochen ist. 

Spätestens bei „Baby Forgive Me“ wird klar, dass „Missing U“ der wilde Start war, von dem sich das Album immer mehr entfernt. Denn bis hier hin wird es von Song zu Song ruhiger. Bei „Baby Forgive Me“ sind wir schon im schwerelosen Robyn-Chill-Universum. Eine verträumte Nummer, die durch das einprägsame „Baby Forgive Me“, das Robyn stetig wiederholt, eine melancholische Verzweiflung ausdrückt und zugleich dennoch ein kraftvolles, optimistisches Gefühl hinterlässt. 

„Send To Robin Immediately“ ist dann der endgültige Beweis, dass dieses Robyn Album eine enorme Portion an Soul in sich trägt, was ihre vorherigen Alben deutlich weniger hatten, weil sie sich dem Beat und dem elektronischen verschrieben hatten. „Send To Robin Immediately“ hat leichte Züge von Madonna´s „Bedtime Story“ und schreit nach Anfang der 90er, als sich RnB und House das erste Mal näher kamen. 

Wer sich nun wieder nach der „Bodytalk“-Robyn sehnt, der wird sich über „Honey“ freuen. Der Song reiht sich wieder in die Robyn Werke ab 2005 ein. Eine melodische Nummer mit einem treibenden Beat. Tanzbar und verträumt, wie wir es von Robyn kennen. 

Mit „Between The Lines“ nimmt das Album wieder Fahrt auf. Der Song stampft mit dem Beat und den Drums erst durch den Dschungel, bis sich die Nummer in eine 90s-House-Explosion verwandelt, die etwas an Dee Lite erinnert. Hier befinden wir uns auch wieder zurück im Club.

Ist das nun Robyn´s „Hotline Bling“? Mag man bei „Beach2k20“ erstmal denken. Nein, willkommen auf der Robyn Copacabana. „Beach2k20“ ist sicherlich der Track mit den wenigsten Vocals auf „Honey“, aber nicht weniger spektakulär. Eine sommerliche Nummer, die ebenfalls in den 90ern bleibt und schon wieder an Tracks wie Dee Lite´s „Good Beat“ erinnert. 

Das Album endet mit „Ever Again“ wie ein Film. Der Track kling nach einem dieser Songs, die am Ende eines Filmes kommen oder erst starten, wenn der Abspann kommt. Auch hier bleibt Robyn absolut Retro und könnte locker Stevie Nicks als Feature auf dem Song haben.

„Honey“ ist nach dem Club

„Honey“ ist für mich eines, wenn nicht sogar das Album des Jahres. Das hat mehrere Gründe: Robyn hat mit „Missing U“ und dem Song „Honey“ vorab nicht die stärksten Songs veröffentlicht, was immer clever ist, wenn die Songs dennoch stark genug sind, um sich zurückzumelden. Zwar ist „Missing U“ die Nummer, die am ehesten den Robyn-Signature-Sound trägt, doch das reicht dann auch. Alles, was danach kommt ist Retro, aber erfrischend, wie kaum eine andere Platte. Robyn erfindet den Sound der 80er und 90er zwar nicht neu, aber dadurch, dass niemand wie Robyn klingt, ist diese Mischung einfach einzigartig und unschlagbar.

Wer sich „Honey“ wiederholt anhört, erkennt eine genau durchdachte Platte, die sich mit Trauer und Verwirrungen im Leben auseinandersetzt. Robyn´s Inspiration ist stets der Club, doch während sich Bodytalk im Club abspielte, verarbeitet „Honey“ alles, was danach passiert. Deswegen ist diese Platte wahrscheinlich auch weniger aufgeregt. Auf „Honey“ kommt Robyn runter vom Rausch und die Gedanken um das Leben kommen hoch. Die Grooves sind tiefer und die Emotionen auch und diese stecken fest im Kopf, wie klebriger Honig.
